In the spring of 1846, President James K. Polk declared war on Mexico. "In making these recommendations I deem it proper to declare that it is my
anxious desire not only to terminate hostilities speedily, but to bring all
matters in dispute between this Government and Mexico to an early and amicable
adjustment; and in this view I shall be prepared to renew negotiations whenever
Mexico shall be ready to receive propositions or to propositions of her own." President James K. Polk. Washington, May 11, 1846. The
President explains that due to the previous existing relationship
between America and Mexico, he sees no problem with declaring war on
them. The Mexico Government has continually done undressed wrongs
and injured citizens of the United States in there persons and
property.
Mexico's President feels differently however. He thinks that by going to war, there will be danger regarding the peace of the world. He does not think it is okay that the US is trying to take away something that is rightfully Mexico's and he finds it insulting to “her” (her being Mexico) dignity as a sovereign nation. Also, by America wanting to take this land for themselves, it threatens her independence and political existence. Before The United States wanted their land, Mexico had no problem with them. They even considered them friends. He said, “And, finally, that the unjust spoliation of which the with to make the Mexican nation the victim, gives her the clear right to use all her resources and power to resist, to the last moment.
